We once filled an "off" night with a last minute gig playing a converted schoolhouse called Lorenzo's. It was a great night and Lorne, the very hospitable owner, took us canoeing the next day.
Fathead performs to an enthusistic crowd at 'Playing With Fire' in Omaha, Nebraska.
Backstage at Massey Hall (Toronto) with B.B. King, circa 2000. Fathead was thrilled to open the show for him. Besides being the "King of The Blues", B.B. is one of the most gracious performers we've ever met. This was no doubt one of the greatest nights we've head had!!!!
Here, the band picks up a Maple Blues Award for Electric Act Of The Year. We've won it a couple of times.
John tore it up at the Maple Blues Awards when he sang a few songs with the house band. Here he's pictured in the grand finale jam with Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne, Sue Foley and Gary Kendall. For the record, John has won the "Vocalist Of The Year" category three times.
Teddy stops for a dip during our canoe trip. The water was freezing and took your breath away. The pristine scenery was breathtaking too.
The band backstage after winning a Juno Award in 1999. That was a pretty proud night. I don't think our feet hit the ground for about two weeks!
John & Al commandeer a cruiser in Vancouver harbour.
Chuck Keeping joined Fathead after Ed White's departure. He stayed with us for about two or three years. He's a great drummer and one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.
Omar, Al & Teddy pose with legendary drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith after a gig in Stratford, Ontario. Al has co-produced three albums with the one time Muddy Waters drummer; "Nothin' But The Blues Y'all", "Blues From The Heart" and "The Juke Joint Rockers - Bluesin' It" which also features John Mays on vocals.
Some tour drives can be pretty gruelling, however after driving all thru the night from Calgary, Alberta to Salmon Arm, BC, Omar was was still wide awake, albeit somewhat delirious.
Sometimes its tough making time to make it to the next gig. In this photo, John waits for the officer to issue a speeding ticket.
John has often sang the national anthem at Skydome for the Blue Jays games. Here he wails "Oh Canada" before the CFL Argos take the field.
Fathead and the Head Coach. The band recently played a charity gig organised by Toronto Argo's head coach Mike "Pinball" Clemens, pictured here with Teddy's guitar.
Pre-Fathead days: Here's a 1967 promo shot of The Christian Soldiers. This is the gospel group that John first sang with. He's pictured here on the far left.
Pre-Fathead days: Here's a photo of Al jamming with the great Luther Allison at Stage 212 in Toronto, circa 1976.
Pre-Fathead days: Omar is pictured here with the the great Etta James and the Albert Hall Allstars. This band got to back many US artists who played at Toronto's long gone blues room, Albert's Hall, including Paul Butterfield.
Pre-Fathead days: Here's The Insiders in 1976. This was taken during the time they were touring with the great James Brown. His big hit at the time was "The Payback". That's John, second from left under the 'fro.
This is an early promo shot of the band from around 1995. It was shot by our good friend Alex Beveridge who has since passed on. Alex shot most of our promo shots and we miss him dearly. The dog, Maisy, belonged to Al and lived to a ripe old age of 18 years. We miss her too.

Jan. 27/05: The dance floor was packed and the joint was jumping at Fathead's CD release party for "Livelier Than Ever!" at the Silver Dollar in Toronto. More than 200 people showed up on the coldest night of the year! |
